Conceptual  Framework for the Proposed Scheme of Sri Aurobindo Foundation

In The Life Divine, Sri Aurobindo pointed out: “At present, mankind is undergoing an evolutionary crisis in which is concealed the choice of its destiny… Man has created a system of civilization, which has become too big for his limited mental capacity and understanding and has his still more limited capacity to utilize and manage, a dangerous servant of his blundering ego and its appetites. For no seeing mind, no intuitive soul of knowledge has yet come to the surface of consciousness which could make this basic fullness of life a condition for the free growth of something that exceeded it.

How does mankind resolve this crisis? By growing in our consciousness beyond the mental to the supramental level was Sri Aurobindo’s reply. So far the evolution of consciousness has resulted successively in the emergence of Life out of Matter and the Mind out of Life. The emergence of Mind marks the beginning of a new process of evolution by which the human being, through a conscious will and aspiration for inner growth becomes a participant and a collaborator in the evolution of his consciousness. Thus this inner growth is a process of conscious evolution. A methodized effort towards self-perfection, which brings into manifestation the potentialities latent in the being, is called Yoga. So far Nature has been doing this yoga slowly for the mass through evolution. Through his consciousness co-operation man can make this evolution rapid.

Sri Aurobindo and his collaborator, The Mother have developed their Integral Yoga as a universal solution to the evolutionary crisis. The aim of this yoga is to make the whole of mankind fit for the higher evolution. And when the new consciousness is received by those in the vanguard of humanity’s march towards its great future, it will create a new world which Sri Aurobindo has described in his magnificent epic poem, Savitri in these words:

“ The world shall be God’s visible garden-house,
The earth shall be a field and camp of God…

Nature shall live to manifest secret God,
The spirit shall take up the human play,
This earthly life becomes the life Divine.”

The aim of the Sri Aurobindo Yoga Foundation of North America Inc. New Jersey will be to be a place for individual and collective transformation through Integral Yoga, to be the place disseminating the knowledge of the Work and Teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother and of their Ashram in Pondicherry, and of Auroville, the international township dedicated to human unity founded by The Mother.

For all this we need outer activities as well as an inner change and our activities will comprehend spiritual, social, and economics spheres of our individual and collective life. The Yoga Foundation will promote and understanding and appreciation of the arts and culture both Eastern and Western and will attempt to give a new soul of harmony and goodwill to globalization which is at the moment entirely propelled blindly by economic and commercial forces.

Study groups in Sri Aurobindo’s and The Mother’s works on Poetry, Art, Interpretations of traditional spiritual texts, social and political studies, Yoga, Philosophy, the philosophy and methods of Integral education will be held on a regular basis. It is proposed to hold different monthly forums for special interest groups and to arrange presentations by specialists in different areas of our interests. Classes will also be conducted in Indian and Western music and dance. It is also proposed to set up a sales center for the books of Sri Aurobindo’s and The Mother and for incense sticks and other items produced by Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry and by Auroville, Tamilnadu, India. There are plans to open a Kid’s Corner for children and a Youth Forum for the young.

Through this institution we wish to make a contribution to the life and value system of the United States of America, which has so liberally allowed Indian to share with them the bounties of their country. Will you not help?
